Scholarships

Scholarships are awarded annually to help students in their journey of becoming better journalists and support advisers in their endeavors to strengthen their media programs.

Maassen Scholarship

2023 application has closed

Fifteen scholarships are awarded each year to students to enable them to attend their first FSPA State Convention. Students selected for the scholarship will have their convention registration waived and must agree to devote two hours of volunteer time during the convention.

The scholarship was named in honor of former FSPA President, Jill Maassen (1983-1987, 1992-1995).

Webb-Stapler Scholarship

Five scholarships are awarded each year to advisers to enable them to attend their first FSPA State Convention. Advisers selected for the scholarship will have their convention registration waived.

Established in 1993, in memory of former FSPA Executive Directors John V. Webb (1967-1976) and Harry Stapler (1986-1987), the scholarship criteria was changed in 2024 to encourage new advisers to attend the state convention, build their programs and bring their students the following year.

Julie E. Dodd Scholarship

2023 application has closed

This $500 scholarship is awarded to an adviser to attend a summer workshop or other journalism training to help strengthen their journalism knowledge and build their programs.

This award started in 2001 in honor of Dr. Julie Dodd, FSPA’s longest serving Executive Director (1989-2000), who continues to support scholastic journalism at the state and national level.
